Born in 1958 in Belgium, lives in Anvers.
The work of Jan Fabre , the Flemish artist ,
doesn't stop surprising the audience for about 15 years,
with his imagination, his orientations, his symbolic world.
His work is very autobiographic and disturbs.
From producer to choregraph or sculptor,
plastician and performer, his work is built from ideas,
symbols, concepts, and there is no mystery in knowing
he started as a performer.
At 17 years old he starts on his first actions
in the city of Anvers which implies a critical relation
about the piece of art as merchendise. 1979:
"Money Performance", 1980 "Money Art in Culture"
and "The rea(dy)make of the Perfomance Money"
during which bank bills were destroyed
and burned. All of Jan Fabre's work is obviously conceptual,
but the concept always is associated
with a strong visual language.
For "Bic-art" he locks himself for 72 hours long
and draw with a "Bic"pen all he sees in the room.
He carries out his work with a serious and a fervour almost
youthful, as if there were instructions to be followed.
This gives them a specific rythm and creates an emotional
distance with the action. "Sanguis/Mantis" ,
performance of Jan Fabre will last about 8 hours.
It will be an exceptionnal time,
knowing that the artist hasn't perform for 15 years.
But he was in Lyon in 1981 and 1982 among the Symposium
art performance introduced by Orlan and Hubert Besacier.
